The global polyethylene films market is projected to grow from USD 90.19 billion in 2022 to approximately USD 139.98 billion by 2032, with an annual growth rate of 4.5% from 2023 to 2032.

Polyethylene (PE) film is derived from the chemical ethylene, which is sourced from natural gas and petroleum. Known by various names like plastic sheeting, poly sheeting, and poly film, PE is one of the most widely used plastic materials in the world. Annually, over 100 million metric tons of PE resin are produced, with polyethylene making up nearly 34% of all global polymer production. In fact, polyethylene production is estimated to reach 22.67 million metric tons. Polyethylene films can be molded into various forms, such as bags, wraps, pouches, and sacks, and are used in a wide range of packaging materials.
Polyethylene films are popular due to their affordability, flexibility, lightweight nature, and protective properties. They can form solid, crystalline shapes, making them highly useful across industries. Many companies use polyethylene for labeling due to its cost-effectiveness, durability, and resistance to wear and tear.
However, polyethylene films take a long time to degrade naturally, which raises environmental concerns. The production of plastic bags in the United States alone is estimated at 380 billion annually, but the recycling rate remains low at around 5%. As a result, much of this waste ends up in rivers, landfills, and oceans, potentially harming the environment.
To mitigate the environmental impact, many companies are focusing on initiatives to accelerate the biodegradation of polyethylene, and as awareness of environmental issues grows, more sustainability efforts are expected. Polyethylene films are highly recyclable, and with the right efforts, their environmental impact can be reduced.
For example, in February 2024, Polymer LLC launched large-format polyethylene film production in Smolensk, marking the completion of a major investment project to create the Polymer-2 production plant.
