Mondelēz International Drives Circular Packaging with Innovative Collaborations and Advanced Recycling Technologies

In its continuous efforts to promote sustainability within the packaging industry, Mondelēz International is making strides toward a more circular economy by enhancing its packaging methods for popular snack brands. CEO Dirk Van de Put, in a statement from September 2024, emphasized the company’s commitment to sourcing materials linked to advanced recycling technologies, specifically mass balance systems. This approach not only demonstrates leadership but also sends a powerful signal to the broader industry about the importance of adopting circular practices to drive the collection, sortation, and processing of plastic waste.

Supporting Circular Economy through Advanced Recycling

Mondelēz International’s partnership with advanced recycling technologies, including chemical or molecular recycling, plays a pivotal role in the company’s environmental strategy. The company is making significant investments in sourcing plastic materials that support the circular packaging economy. These efforts are part of Mondelēz’s broader goal of achieving sustainability in its packaging by 2025.

One notable example of this commitment is the collaboration with its Triscuit brand in the U.S. and Canada. Mondelēz has announced plans to procure plastic materials linked to sophisticated recycling technologies for packaging a majority of its Triscuit Crackers. Triscuit, a beloved snacking brand with over a century of history, will adopt recycled plastics using the ISCC mass balance approach, enabling the brand to participate in a circular packaging economy. This initiative contributes to Mondelēz’s aim of ensuring that 5% of its plastic comes from recycled sources by 2025.

The use of recycled plastics was once thought to be limited, particularly in soft plastic packaging, which was traditionally seen as a single-use material. However, with advancements in technology and innovative approaches, Mondelēz is helping to break down this notion and encourage wider adoption of sustainable practices across the industry.

Rising Demand for Confectionery Packaging

As Mondelēz and other companies continue to innovate in sustainable packaging, the global confectionery packaging market is also experiencing significant growth. Valued at USD 11.04 billion in 2024, the market is expected to expand to USD 15.73 billion by 2034, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.6%. This growth is driven by increasing consumer demand for convenience, product protection, and sustainability in packaging solutions. In North America, the demand for innovative, eco-friendly packaging solutions is especially rising, as companies like Mondelēz are prioritizing circular packaging systems.

This increasing demand presents an opportunity for businesses within the confectionery sector to not only improve packaging aesthetics and functionality but also to adopt environmentally responsible packaging practices. With sustainability at the forefront of consumers’ minds, companies that prioritize recyclable and reusable packaging solutions stand to gain a competitive edge in the market.

Collaborative Innovations with Saica Group

In another significant step toward sustainable packaging, Mondelēz International joined forces with the Saica Group in June 2024 to introduce a new paper-based product designed to support the chocolate, biscuit, and confectionery markets. The product is made to be recyclable in the paper waste stream, addressing the growing demand for eco-friendly alternatives to traditional packaging. Intended for multipack items, this innovative product is designed to meet the Confederation of European Paper Industry’s (CEPI) sustainability criteria, ensuring that it aligns with industry standards for recyclability.

The product can be created with or without coating and is engineered for use in heat-sealable packaging processes, offering versatility while reducing reliance on non-recyclable materials. This collaboration is yet another example of Mondelēz’s drive to integrate sustainability into its packaging strategies.

Paper Twister Packaging for Confectionery

In addition to working with Saica Group, Mondelēz’s efforts reflect a broader industry trend toward sustainable solutions, highlighted by the introduction of innovative packaging by other companies like the Adapa Group. In October 2023, Adapa launched Paper Twister, a new twist-wrap packaging solution made from paper for use in confectionery and sweets. This new product, which is designed for flexibility and recyclability, further underscores the growing movement within the flexible packaging sector toward adopting paper-based, eco-friendly alternatives.
