Coveris Expands Offerings with Innovative Vacuum Skin Packaging Investment

Coveris, a prominent packaging manufacturer, is bolstering its capabilities in barrier films with a strategic investment in vacuum skin packaging (VSP). This expansion initiative is supported by a substantial multi-million pound investment at Coveris’ specialized extrusion site located in Winsford, Cheshire. Notably, this site stands as the UK’s largest blown extrusion facility for polyethylene (PE) films.

The investment at Coveris Winsford encompasses the establishment of a dedicated manufacturing hall and the deployment of state-of-the-art VSP conversion equipment. Leveraging its market-leading co-extrusion capabilities, Coveris Winsford will utilize its expertise in producing nine-layer EVOH barrier films tailored for the meat, fish, and dairy sectors.

Vacuum skin packaging is distinguished by its skin-like appearance, enhancing product presentation and appealing to consumers’ preferences for high-quality packaging. Retailers stand to benefit from up to 25 additional days of shelf-life and heightened product security, attributable to the superior performance properties of VSP films compared to traditional packaging formats. Coveris’ VSP films have undergone validation on major standard skin packing lines and demonstrate compatibility with PE, PET, PP, aluminum, and cartonboard substrates.

At the helm of innovation, Coveris Winsford hosts a Film Science Lab and a team of technologists dedicated to advancing, optimizing, and validating its acclaimed films. An ongoing innovation project aims to reduce the gauge of Coveris VSP films below the industry average, maximizing benefits while minimizing environmental impact.

Sujoy Bose, Managing Director of Coveris Winsford, expresses enthusiasm about the development: “Coveris remains committed to spearheading the development of high-performance, technical films. The introduction of VSP films to Coveris Winsford’s product portfolio presents an exciting opportunity to leverage our existing capabilities in multi-layer barrier films, backed by substantial investment and innovation expertise. Complementing our current range of specialist films designed for food sectors requiring EVOH barrier properties to extend shelf-life and ensure product safety, the introduction of VSP films resonates with a core tenet of Coveris’ No Waste vision: minimizing product waste.”
